This period included the American Civil War, as well as the events from the European Revolutions of 1848-49 through the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership. In this general survey, he will also emphasize the period of the two World Wars—in which Germany was the principal adversary of the United States—and the advent of the Cold War, during which the Bundesrepublik became a pillar of NATO and the European Economic Community.
